Playing deejays, Taiwanese girl band S.H.E. want to send 'waves of hope & joy'

A NEW radio station is now available in cyberspace, starring none other than Taiwan's top girl band S.H.E. For the group's latest album FM S.H.E, the bubbly trio Selina, Hebe and Ella have turned themselves into music deejays.

Since 23 Sep, their chirpy voices have been heard every night on a special Internet radio website set up by their record label, HIM Music. As a deejay, Selina, 27, is her usual sweet, girlish self as she discusses current affairs and bizarre tales around the world. Ella, 27, gets to be a 'late-night deejay', who keeps insomniacs and night owls company. As for Hebe, 25, she transforms into the cynical Madam Xi Bi, who plays agony aunt to young girls troubled by affairs of the heart.

When asked to comment on how love changes her two partners, Hebe said in a press release that Ella becomes 'silly and naive'. Ella was recently linked to actor Baron Chen (Kung Fu Dunk), after ending a 75-day relationship with deejay-singer Chen Xi. Hebe said of Ella: 'Usually, she doesn't spare any thought for herself, and it gets worse when she's in love... and it's useless for us to nag her.'

Hebe added that Selina would also be 'blinded by love' sometimes. Selina has been photographed going on dates with a lawyer, although she kept insisting they are 'just friends'.

But she did admit on TV recently that her mum has been trying to arrange matchmaking sessions for her. She added: 'If I come across any eligible candidates, I would introduce the sunshine boy to Ella and the handsome one to Hebe. But, of course, I get to pick first.'

'Rational' about love

Singleton Hebe professes to be the 'most rational' one among the trio when it comes to love, but she is unsure if that is a good thing. 'For instance, if the guy goes missing or doesn't pick up his phone, other girls would suspect that he's two-timing them,' she said. 'But I'll try to rationalise it, thinking that his phone is running low on batteries or there's bad reception.'

On their new album, the girls said it has been an unhappy year filled with disasters such as the Sichuan earthquake, and they want to send 'waves of hope and joy' to the world with their happy-go-lucky tunes. Ella added that their new songs also aim to inspire girls to 'love themselves more' instead of falling in love blindly.

One of their ballads is a collaboration between Selina and R&B whiz Jay Chou. The story goes that Selina told Jay one day that she wanted to sing a song like his hit number An Jing (Quiet), and he wrote a similar tune for her within five minutes. He then told her to write the lyrics herself, and she spent the entire night crying as she poured her own sorrow into the song, entitled An Jing Le (It's Quiet).
